About the Project

A refresh of the popular Dumplings restaurant brand website.

While their business was growing exponentially, their website looked fairly basic and didn’t provide a very accessible user-experience. Humpty’s Dumplings then assigned me the task to redesign their website to improve client accessibility to the business’s information.

After acquiring all the information regarding the business and it’s clientele, I began re-constructing their website’s brand in a CMS environment so they could easily edit the content after I had completed the design.

Matching the Brand Identity

Humpty’s Dumplings already had a great logo and theme for their restaurants. Using that as an inspiration I was able to create a design system that would compliment the aesthetic of the brand.

The minimalist design language is attributed to the simplicity of the logo, color scheme and menu. The white-space with the hint of burgundy red provide a spaced out atmosphere which provides a clean and attractive design.

I decided to use the Humpty’s mascot throughout the menu headers to provide a sense of consistency and visual flair to the otherwise, empty design.

Showing Off the Menu

Prior to the redesign, Humpty’s Dumplings was using a third-party API to display their menu which broke the consistency of the design language and was not attractive in responsive sizes.

Since the menu was limited and each Dumpling looked small and unique, it was clear that displaying an image of each menu item would compliment the design well. I requested photos of each Dumpling and then edited the images to match the theme. The items were then sorted in to a grid layout and could be viewed much more easily than before.

Being the most important part of the website, I ensured that each menu item was a component with a hover effect that displayed descriptive text. This provided a much more interactive experience with the menu.

Focus on User Experience

With more and more people ordering food online everyday, it was of utmost importance to make the website as useable as possible during the crucial moments of when users are deciding on a place to eat.

I re-designed the website with a mobile-first approach; for the motive of allowing users to access certain information as quickly as possible.

One of the most common use-case scenario for restaurant websites is when users are on their devices deciding where and what to eat. Using this as the mentality, I aimed to provide the user with the fastest access to the menu and business hours. Both the categories are anchor linked in the middle of the banner section of the homepage and are placed immediately after that section.
